Solving Yellow Leaves in Citrus: Complete Diagnostic Guide to Zinc, Iron, Magnesium & Boron

By Maison Canopy Horticulture Team • 10 Oct 2026 • 100% Nursery-Verified Protocol
Key Horticultural Takeaways
  • Iron deficiency appears on the newest top leaves first (green veins on pale yellow leaf blade).
  • Zinc deficiency creates small, narrow, upright "little leaves" with creamy yellow blotches between veins.
  • Magnesium deficiency shows on older lower leaves as a green V-shaped wedge at the base with yellow margins.
  • Foliar sprays of chelated micronutrients (2 g/L) on half-expanded spring and autumn flushes correct deficiencies 5× faster than soil application.

How to Read Citrus Leaves Like an Orchardist

Sweet oranges, mandarins, mosambi, and lemons are heavy micronutrient feeders. When soil pH rises above 7.2 or pots are over-watered, roots cannot absorb trace minerals even if they are present in the soil.

1. Zinc (Zn) — Interveinal Mottle & Rosetting

Symptoms: Young terminal leaves become small, narrow, and pointed with yellow blotches between green veins. Internodes shorten.
Correction: Foliar spray of Chelated Zinc (Zn-EDTA at 1.5 g/L) or Zinc Sulphate (3 g/L neutralized with 1.5 g hydrated lime) on new flushes.

2. Iron (Fe) — Fine Green Network on Pale New Leaves

Symptoms: The youngest leaves turn pale ivory-yellow while the finest veins remain a sharp green network.
Correction: Avoid waterlogging; apply Fe-EDDHA or Fe-EDTA chelate (1.5 g/L foliar or 5 g/pot soil drench).

3. Magnesium (Mg) — Inverted Green "V" on Older Leaves

Symptoms: Occurs during heavy fruit fill as Magnesium moves from old leaves into developing seeds. Older leaves yellow along the edges while a triangle at the petiole base stays green.
Correction: Spray Magnesium Sulphate (Epsom salt, MgSO4 at 5 g/L) twice in May and August.

4. Boron (B) — Hard, Dry Fruit & Rind Cracking

Symptoms: Premature fruitlet drop, thick albedo, gum pockets in the central axis, and low juice content.
Correction: Spray Solubor (Boron 20% at 1 g/L) at flower bud initiation and petal fall.
